President Pens

PresidentSpeak…………..

While the country is experiencing a Transparency Revolution, Medical fraternity is not lagging far behind!

While our elected representatives turned into autocrats and became a law unto themselves, answerable to none, one Mr. Anna Hajare, has brought them to their knees and has almost made them agree to the Jan Lok Pal bill. When this bill gets  drafted and passed in the Lok Sabha, it will truly make our elected representatives answerable to the people. The bill may not be a panacea for all the illnesses that dog our democracy, but at least  it will dispel the belief of our “rulers” that they can get away with a Murder !

An innovative programme – “An Interaction with M.M.C.”, is being organised by our association on Sunday,  26th June 2011. Our elected representatives to MMC – elected by us two years back, along with those nominated by the government have finally assumed office. Our members will have an opportunity to interact with them and get answers  to all their questions that they didn’t know whom to ask. Though they (our elected representatives) are a part of the MMC, they represent us ! They will be putting forth our point of view on any issue – be it accreditation, medical education, compulsion about rural posting, eradication of quackery menace, PNDT Act, suspension of registration and re-registration. It is a great feeling to know that we all will be a part of the decision making and framing of the rules which we all will follow to improve the healthcare system as well as observing Medical Ethics. We will truly feel empowered with the knowledge that autocratic administration is replaced by a democratic one.  And that there is somebody who will give a sympathetic ear to our grievances.

Some thoughts on the alleged murder of a mid-day journalist Mr. J. Dey. I agree that 3rd degree murder is different than an assault, but if the media shows same intensity and sensitivity for assault on doctors, as they have shown in J. Dey’s case, medical fraternity will respect them out of love, not out of fear.

There is a lesson from Panchtantra for everybody to relearn in this episode. Journalism and the media are double edged weapons, and can cut both ways. Sometimes it hurts the person who is wielding it, though more often it is used to hurt others.

Give a man a job he loves, and he will not have to work for a day ! I experienced this when on 29th of May when  I visited and met our members enjoying the NAGOTHANE TRIP, organised by Member’s Welfare Sub Committee, Chairman – Dr. Mehul Bhatt. There was no trace of anxiety or stress on his face while was coolly working on making the trip enjoyable for our members. For him, it was not a job. It was all fun !  It was a great pleasure to see members and their children enjoying the ambience of the resort, swimming, rifle shooting, rock climbing, rappling, river crossing & kayaking surfing.

Great job, Dr. Mehul !

World Asthma Day Programme, co-ordinated by Dr. Akil Contractor was greatly appreciated by members for the quality of lecture as well as the organization. One can’t stop wondering at the enthusiasm of Dr. Akil to work to arrange CGP programmes month after month, year after  the year. May he continue to serve the association longer than Mr. M. F. Hussain did to the world of Art.

Diabetes Update on 22nd May again saw a jampacked “Stadium”, as eminent speakers Dr. Bandukwala,              Dr. Ajay Kedia, Dr. Chandalia, Dr. Dheeraj Kapoor & Dr. Mangesh Tiwaskar shared their expertise with our members.

July is again going to be another  hectic month with Doctor’s Day & Gynaecon, lined up to give the members their staple diet of CME.

Doctor’s Day is arranged as an evening programme followed by cultural programme culminating into “Spiritual” night.

So friends, our association is cruising along in a top gear. Enjoy the ride !

Long Live IMA!

Dr. Ashok Balsekar
